Water Uniformity Tool Identifies Energy, Water and Fertilizer Savings

A new online computer program — the Distribution Uniformity and Return-on-Investment Estimator — helps growers measure how evenly their irrigation system applies water while identifying areas in need of maintenance, repairs or upgrades. The tool also calculates an estimated return on investment based on water, energy and fertilizer savings and potential yield improvements. The online tool can be downloaded for free.

The tool allows evaluators to sample just one representative block in their grove with a few pressure and flow measurements. A two-person team can typically finish sampling in about four to six hours. The programs helps evaluators determine where to collect flow and data. After the data is entered into the program, the tool generates a comprehensive report that can help growers identify waste and how much yield could be improved. In general, every 1 percent improvement in distribution uniformity is expected to provide a .5% , or more, improvement in yield.
