Virtual Avocado Production Course Available

The University of California Cooperative Extension is offering a virtual Avocado Production for New Growers course series throughout the summer that begins on Tuesday, July 6 and ends Thursday, August 19. The virtual sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during this time period, with no classes on August 5 and August 12. An in-person field trip also will be hosted as part of the course series, with the date to be announced later this summer.

This comprehensive course series covers a wide range of topics, including the following:

  • California avocado history
  • Avocado physiology and phenology
  • Field establishment and propagation
  • Nutrition
  • How to read water and soil tests
  • Cover crops
  • Irrigation
  • Canopy management
  • Vertebrate pest management
  • Varieties/post harvest
  • Extreme weather do’s and don’ts
  • Fire prevention
  • Identification and management of invasive pests
  • Diseases
  • Weed management
  • Avocado rootstocks

The fee for the entire course series is $200. Participants can opt to choose specific sessions at a rate of $30 per class. Registration is now available online.
