FDA Guidance Concerning Use of Face Masks for the Agricultural Industry
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a statement on April 3 recommending the use of cloth face coverings in public settings where physical distancing measures are difficult to maintain. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided the following guidance for workers on farms, in food production and processing as concerns the use of cloth face coverings.
- Maintain face coverings per the parameters of the FDA’s Model Food Code sections 4-801.11 Clean Linens and 4.802.11 Specifications.
- Launder reusable face coverings daily
The CDC cloth face coverings webpage provides information concerning the proper way to wear a cloth face cover, washing instructions, directions on how to safely remove a face covering, and sew and no-sew instructions for making a cloth face covering.
Please note that the cloth face coverings recommended by the CDC are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators as those items are critical supplies that should be reserved for medical first responders and healthcare workers.
