Production Research Program Update
In early 2010, the California Avocado Commission (CAC) held a two-day planning meeting to craft a strategic framework for the industry’s Production Research Program. Following the identification of strategic imperatives and key priorities by the Commission Board, CAC’s Production Research Committee began a process of critical review of those research areas that represent a significant investment of grower funds, such as entomology and plant breeding. Plant breeding is a long-term strategic activity that CAC has sponsored for several decades in partnership with the University of California, Riverside.
The link below downloads a review of the CAC-sponsored plant breeding program written by Dr. Jonathan Dixon, CAC Research Program Director, from a strategic perspective evaluating the industry’s historical effort to develop new fruit varieties and rootstocks. The review is intended to be a stimulus for further discussion by the grower community as CAC considers next steps in its plant breeding program.
